Long-duration energy storage that can
buffer the fluctuating output
of solar and wind power plants will be key
components in future power grids.
Batteries are good for short-term storage,
but for longer durations, we need other solutions.
The most promising technologies convert electricity
and store it as heat or compressed air.
In all those systems, heat exchangers are
key components.
That is the reason Alfa Laval developed the
Packinox+, which I will present in this video.
But first I would like to say a few words
about the round-trip efficiency.
This is the ratio between the output and input
of an energy storage system.
And if you want to maximize it, you need heat
exchangers with outstanding performance
and high capacity.
And on top of that, low CAPEX to make the
solution commercially viable.
For all these reasons, Packinox+ is
the ideal solution.
It combines, in the same heat exchanger, a true
counter-current configuration and high-performance
corrugated channels, which means you only
need half the heat transfer area
required in a shell-and-tube solution.
This makes a huge difference on CAPEX
when you need tens or hundreds
of thousands of square metres
and even more so if the requested
material is stainless steel.
Thanks to its unique design, a Packinox+ can
operate with temperature programmes spanning
up to 500 degrees Celsius and have more than
20,000 m² plate area in a single heat exchanger
which reduces the number of units and the
related installation costs.
Other advantages are the low pressure drop,
which helps increase the round-trip efficiency
and the very high mechanical robustness and
resistance to fatigue, which is essential
in cyclical operations typical of energy storage.
A Packinox+ is designed and finetuned for
each customer’s requirements and operations.
And thanks to Alfa Laval FlexFlow technology,
it is optimized for highly asymmetrical flows,
which are very common in this application.
