Right now, humanity is undertaking the greatest
shift in energy sourcing since the 19th century.
As we transition from fossil
fuels to renewable energy
there are some challenges
we must overcome.
One of the key issues is the changing
output from wind and solar power plants.
To avoid energy shortages and price spikes,
we need some form of buffer storage
to create a balance between supply and
demand on the energy market.
Batteries are very good for short-term
storage, but for longer durations
new solutions are required.
Some of the most promising technologies currently
being developed transform the electrical energy
and store it as heat or compressed air.
Heat exchangers are key components in these
systems and Alfa Laval has recently developed
a new heat exchanger for this application
called Packinox+.
Joining me today is my colleague
Benoit Senechal who will tell us more.
Benoit, can you please explain how
Packinox+ heat exchangers
help improve the overall efficiency of long
duration energy storage systems?
Ho, ho Emilie, I’m here!
For sure I can.
But first, I would like to say a few words
about round-trip efficiency.
This is the ratio between the output and
input of an energy storage system
and as the price of electricity
increases
so does the value of every extra
percentage point of efficiency.
Now, to maximize the round-trip efficiency,
you need heat exchangers with
outstanding performance and high capacity.
And on top of that, low CAPEX to
make the solution commercially viable.
For all these reasons,
Packinox+ the ideal solution.
It combines high-performance corrugated channels
and a true counter-current configuration,
which leads to a halving of the required heat transfer
area compared to a shell-and-tube solution.
This makes a huge difference on CAPEX
when you require tens or hundreds of
thousands of square metres
and even more so when requested
material is stainless steel.
Since a Packinox can have more than
20,000 m² in one single heat exchanger
the number of required units and the
installation costs are reduced substantially.
Thank you, Benoit.
